A Good Story
Storytime

Toddlers &

Preschoolers

Storytime at James River Valley Library System is deigned for toddlers, and preschoolers, or any child who still enjoys hearing stories, singing songs, and using their imaginations! Stories, puppets, songs, action rhymes, and child/parent participation are some of the fun activities included during storytime. No registration is needed for individual families. Please, no large groups, as space is limited. Storytime will run for approximately 30 minutes, but may run longer or shorter depending on the activities. Art Class
Simple Crafts

Toddlers &

Preschoolers

Simple crafts take place every other Tuesday, immediately following Storytime. Crafts will be simple, but will allow each child to be creative and are designed to help develop your child's fine motor skills. We will use many different types of craft supplies such as; glue, glitter, paint, clay, markers, fuzzy sticks and more! Paint aprons will be provided for messy crafts, but please be sure to dress your child in clothes you don't mind getting a bit messy! Engineering Robot Car
Maker Monday

Ages: 9+ 

Calling All tween & teen Inventors! Join us on the third Monday of each month at James River Valley Library System for Maker Mondays! This event will allow kids ages 9+, to imagine, design, create, and explore the world of S.T.E.A.M using various types of materials! Makerspace activities will include; robotics, snap circuits, simple coding, 3D Pens, Kinex, Legos, and more! All supplies needed to create the inventions will be provided first come, first served. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. Registration will open one week prior to the event. Visit our Events Calendar to find out when the next Maker Monday is scheduled. 

Playing with Toy Vehicles
LEGO Club

Ages: 5+ 

At each meeting we will give those who want to be challenged a design to create, and for those who just want to come and build what you want, that’s okay too! Each child will have the opportunity to share with the group what they created. All Lego creations will go on display in the Children's Department of the Library, and will be taken apart prior to the next meeting. All Legos and supplies will be provided. Please do not bring your own legos. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. Registration will open one week prior to the event. Popcorn
Movie Nights

Ages: 5+ 

Join us for a movie on the BIG SCREEN at the library! We will show a G or PG rated movie once per month. Free popcorn and Juice will be provided first come, first served. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. Registration will be open beginning one week prior to the event. Check out our Events Calendar to find out when the next Movie @ The Library is scheduled. 

Game Controller
Games @ The Library

Ages: 9+ 

Looking for something fun to do after school? Join us at Alfred Dickey Library for an afternoon of fun and games! We will play X-Box Kinect games, board games, card games, and much more! Free snacks will also be provided! There is no need to register for this event. Please call the Children's Department at the library if you would like more information. Great Beginnings Family Book Club

Families

Here’s how it works- register your family in the children’s department at Alfred Dickey Library at the beginning of the month to get a copy of the book. Read the book with your family, then we will meet on the last Thursday of the month to discuss the book, and do book related activities! The next book will be announced at each meeting. This book club runs from February-April (Copies of the books are available, while supplies last & must be returned to the library.) REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT.
